iPhone 16e Review: A New Era for Budget iPhones or Just a Missed Opportunity?
The iPhone SE is dead; long live the iPhone E! Apple has officially replaced its affordable SE lineup with the new iPhone 16e, and while the name might seem fresh, the device's positioning has stirred some controversy. The iPhone 16e is a surprising choice, especially since it doesn't quite deliver on the "compact" or "affordable" promises many were hoping for. Instead, it’s an attempt to bring the core Apple experience to the masses, but it’s not without its compromises.
The iPhone 16e: An Affordable iPhone, But Not the One We Wanted
According to Apple, the iPhone 16e is their first step toward creating a line of "economical" iPhones. This new model boasts a durable design, top-tier performance, solid security, and all the features we’ve come to expect from Apple — but at a more affordable price point. It sounds like the dream phone for budget-conscious users, right?
Well, let’s just say we had higher hopes. Many were waiting for a revamped iPhone 13 mini, but instead, we got the iPhone 16e, which is more similar to the iPhone 13 in terms of design and size, but with a few tweaks.
iPhone 16e Design and Features: A Step Back or Just Different?
When it comes to design, the iPhone 16e doesn’t offer much new. The 6.1-inch OLED screen with a 60Hz refresh rate is practically a direct carryover from 2021’s iPhone 13. It has the familiar Ceramic Shield glass, and yes, the large FaceID notch is back (though, in fairness, it's slightly smaller than the notch on the iPhone 12).
But before you dismiss it entirely, there are some notable improvements. The iPhone 16e features a USB-C charging port, replacing the Lightning port that has been a staple of Apple devices for years. It’s about time, considering most of the tech world has already embraced USB-C. Another new addition is the Action Key, borrowed from recent iPhone models, allowing you to customize the button for various tasks.
Performance: Powered by the Apple A18 Chip
At the heart of the iPhone 16e is Apple’s latest A18 chip, accompanied by 8GB of RAM. This new processor promises better performance and efficiency, thanks to the in-house C1 modem, which improves battery life and network coverage. Plus, with satellite messaging support in select regions, it’s clear that Apple is pushing this device as a versatile and up-to-date option for those seeking the core Apple experience at a lower cost.
The Camera: A Simpler Setup
In another nod to its more affordable nature, the iPhone 16e simplifies things when it comes to cameras. There’s only one rear camera, a 48MP wide-angle shooter with 2x lossless zoom. While the camera quality may not match that of the iPhone 16 (likely due to a smaller sensor), it’s still a solid option for casual photography. The front camera, however, gets a significant upgrade, as it’s the same 12MP unit found in the iPhone 16, complete with autofocus.
Battery Life: Bigger Battery, But What About the Performance?
One of the more promising aspects of the iPhone 16e is its battery life. With a 4005mAh battery, it’s larger than the one in the iPhone 16, which could mean more longevity, especially when paired with Apple's latest efficiency improvements. Fast charging is supported, with the phone capable of charging up to 50% in 30 minutes. And although it doesn’t have MagSafe, wireless charging is still available (albeit at a slower 7.5W speed).
What’s Missing: Where’s MagSafe and More Color Options?
While the iPhone 16e offers plenty of features, it's not without its drawbacks. One of the biggest disappointments is the lack of MagSafe support — a feature that debuted with the iPhone 12 and has since become a staple in Apple’s lineup. If you're a fan of wireless charging and magnetic accessories, the 16e will feel like a step backward. Another downside is the limited color options — it’s available only in black and white, unlike some of the more vibrant options seen in previous models.
iPhone 16e: The Verdict
So, is the iPhone 16e a winner, or is it a missed opportunity? On one hand, the iPhone 16e delivers an iPhone experience that’s accessible to more people. The solid build, vibrant OLED display, A18 chip, and improved satellite messaging make it a great option for those who need a reliable, affordable smartphone.
However, if you were hoping for something more compact or a return of the beloved iPhone mini, the iPhone 16e might feel like a letdown. The lack of MagSafe, fewer camera features, and limited color choices leave us wishing Apple had taken a different approach.
At the end of the day, the iPhone 16e is a solid phone — it just may not be the phone everyone was hoping for.
